It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you, he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.
These were the words Moses spoke over his successor, Joshua. Moses had been a phenomenal leader, he had trusted God and succeeded in leading the Israelites out of 400 years of slavery. Moses had parted the Red Sea for the Israelites to escape from the Egyptian army that was chasing them at their heels. But now, a new thing was happening…Moses would not get to see the promised land, instead Joshua was going to lead them over.
Can we take a moment to just imagine how Joshua felt. THE primary leader who performed miracles to free your entire people group is telling you that now YOU are going to be in charge. There is no one else to look up to, because the success of your entire race now depends on YOU…if I was Joshua, I would be pretty nervous, fearful, and anxious.
Maybe Joshua questioned his own readiness to lead, or maybe he questioned whether God would be with him like He was with Moses (i.e turning water into blood, parting red seas, talking directly with God on mountains, you know the “casual” stuff Moses did with God’s strength lol).
Joshua doubted himself, but God told Moses to encourage Joshua and we find the the words Moses spoke over Joshua in Deuteronomy 31:8. The Lord your God goes before you and is with you! These same words can also encourage us today.
When you accept Jesus as your lord and savior His Holy Spirit begins to live inside of you (see John 14:16; 1 Corinthians 3:16). You can’t live the way you lived before because you know God is WITH you. You don’t have to walk alone anymore because God is WITH you. Loneliness and anxiety will come but you can speak God’s Word over your life because God is WITH you. You are now in right standing with God from no effort of your own because God is WITH you.
Do you get the picture? GOD is on your side, He will NOT leave you. Jesus knew this truth, and right before all of his friends were about to forsake him, John records Jesus saying, “…you will be scattered…and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me” (John 16:32). His best friends were about to leave him, but Jesus knew that God was with him even when everyone else left.
I want to encourage you to internalize this Biblical TRUTH. The Lord God loves you, and if you are His child through Christ Jesus, He is WITH YOU.
When you feel hurt, alone, rejected, and unloved remember that you are NOT alone. That you have a good, good Father in Heaven who is longing for you to come to Him so that He can heal your broken heart. God will heal your heart, He will comfort you, and He will help you forgive. You need to only bring your pain to Him. Get on your knees and cry out to Him because He is WITH YOU, He is listening, and He will give you peace.
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
I love you, and God loves you so much more.
