Today I was reading and meditating on John 15 (many of us know this as the “remain in the vine” chapter). However, while reading I was pleasantly surprised. Now let me give you a little back story before I continue.
In the past I was “THE ULTIMATE PEOPLE PLEASER.” I loved to make other people happy…even if it hurt me. Now, I have learned that the old saying “you can’t please everbody” is (in fact) true. But sometimes I relapse into wanting to please others more than I want to even please God.
YEP…I said it. Sometimes I put other people’s thoughts of me above God’s. This is obviously unhealthy and I had to LET GO (wink wink that’s the name of this blog) of this destructive mentality.
However, recently I faced a situation with an organization that I worked for (I’m no longer working with them) where the director reprimanded me for my personal statements about my Christian faith and mission work on my own social media page. Now you’d think I would be upset with the director, but no… I started blaming myself! I wanted to “ppl please” so much that I started wondering if I did something wrong, and how I could make everything better.
As I prayed and began giving this issue to the Lord, He led me to John chapter 15 (Yep, we just came full circle, back to John). I wanted to whine and say “God I already read that chapter” but this time I was obedient and the Holy Spirit pointed out a part that I had skimmed over many times before. Its like Jesus himself was speaking to me through the words on that page.
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the the world, therefore the world hates you…If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” – John 15:18-20
So if Jesus was hated by the world then of course (as His followers) we are going to be persecuted and hated because of our beliefs. So please, don’t be surprised if people in the world hate you, or if they criticize your views, and try to defame your name. Just know you are being persecuted like Jesus, and that obviously means you are doing something right.
We cannot please everybody, and haters are always gonna’ hate on you simply because they see Jesus inside of you.
